The Samsung Star known as Tocco Lite in the market was the talk of the town two years ago, when it was released. Its candy bar shape and touch screen feature appealed to many as a sturdy model for a reasonable price. I used the phone for a while and liked it but returned to a QWERTY phone after finding the touch screen rather tiresome.

Samsung has now released the Star II which is very similar to the Tocco Lite, though there have been a few improvements in the new model. The 3-inch 240×400 display screen is capacitive instead of resistive. It features a 3.2 megapixel camera and since it is designed to be a budget model, it does not have 3G but has the Wi-Fi feature.

Social Networking features and an upgraded TouchWiz user interface, version 3.0, have been added. Common features such as the alarm, calendar, document viewer, to-do list and calculator are also provided.

The handset also has version 3.0 Bluetooth and a microUSB serving USB 2.0

The announcement of the Samsung Star II’s release was made on the 18th of January 2011. Its release in Germany is scheduled to be on the 1st of February, followed by Europe, South America, the Middle East and India. The price of the handset is still unknown but it is sure to be slightly more than the Tocco Lite which was priced at about €100 at the time of its release.

The good news for regular Samsung users is that the Galaxy is in keeping with the same well known Samsung design, making using the phone very straightforward. A popular smartphone, the Galaxy has features such as a barcode scanner, turning the handsets built in camera into a scanner then accessing the information via the internet to get the best prices for that product.

The 3G technology available with the Galaxy means accessing the internet via the Wi-Fi feature ensures quicker downloads and faster connections. Another popular feature on a lot of the latest mobile phones is a GPS tracking system, helpful if going out of town to find one’s way around. The Samsung Galaxy also offers a tap touch screen similar to the iPhone and has Bluetooth making hands free telephone calls much easier for those on the go.

Some users of the Samsung Galaxy may find that trying to text in landscape is awkward as the keyboard is rather small and fairly clumsy to use, but after a few tries it is easy enough to get the hang of.

Poor battery life is another downside to this handset, especially when using the 3G and Wi-Fi features; this seems to drain the battery much more quickly and reduces battery life to just a couple of hours.

The built in camera takes good quality pictures but seems to be very sensitive to light which can result in glare on the photographs taken, or making the pictures look ‘washed out’.

The Samsung Galaxy is a good all round phone with a few areas for improvement.

The Tocco Lite is virtually identical to the LG Cookie and retails at a more expensive price, so is the Tocco Lite really a worthwhile purchase?

To look at, the handsets are exactly the same shape and size, as are the screens. The screens are also the same specification in type, colour definition, size and pixels. The screen is a big one – 3 inches – and works with Samsung’s Touchwiz, a familiar interface to the Samsung faithful. It is a popular interface and the mobile widgets allow you to customise the home screen so that it is simple to access the functions such as traffic conditions, the clock, etc. It comes with a built-in accelerometer sensor that lets you rotate the screen between portrait and landscape.

Like the LG Cookie, there’s a 3.2 megapixel camera with smile detection and digital zoom. It also allows you to edit your photos on-screen. There’s also a basic camcorder.

There’s a FM radio with RDS and the Tocco Lite supports the downloading of MP3 ringtones. The audio quality is above average.

The LG Cookie and the Tocco Lite both have memories that increase to 16 GB with a memory card. Also like the Cookie, this does not have Wi-Fi so access to sites like YouTube is slow and laborious.

This is a budget phone and for the money is a little cracker. On the whole, the Tocco Lite just sneaks ahead of the LG Cookie in terms of value for money.

The Samsung Genio Touch (others may know it as the S3650 Corby) is a simple to use 3G touch screen phone. It has a 2.8-inch colour touch screen, which is a large screen in an overall compact phone measuring 10.3 cm in height, 5.7 cm in width and 1.3 cm in depth. It’s a lightweight phone weighing only 92g including the battery which makes it economical for carrying; it avoids being insubstantial, however, because of its overall design.

Included with the handset is an expandable memory card slot allowing the user to insert a memory card with a capacity of up to sixteen gigabytes of external memory. The phone operates over GSM and 3G networks, and has inbuilt EDGE technology and GPRS which ensures that the user has high speed connectivity to the internet. The Genio Touch has the capability to speedily transfer files to other hardware.

The phone connects to Bluetooth compatible devices with a wire free Bluetooth connection or a USB connection with USB devices.

The Genio Touch has an integrated WAP web browser that supports XHTML and HTML web browsing.

The phone comes with the standard SMS texting service, email, camera and video, contact list and games. All services are straightforward and simple to operate.

In addition to this, the phone also can be used as a radio and a music centre. Music can be downloaded from PCs or from an internet music store. The phone supports WMA, MP3 and eAAc music formats.

This swish phone has a 3.2 inch touch screen that displays almost six million colours in high resolution. The black brushed effect casing adds a touch of sophistication to this already stylish handset. It is a slim line handset that will easily fit into a pocket or a hand, its dimensions being 115 mm by 56 mm by 11.9 mm. The Galaxy supports an Android operating system that enables you to have a fun experience with a simple to use menu.

The phone has Wi-Fi that allows you access to the web whenever you’re near a hotspot or via a wireless LAN. It operates over a GSM quad band network and covers HSDPA 900, 2100 and 1700. GPS navigation is integral, allowing you access to Google maps. It supports 3G technology and that means fast access to the internet and high-speed transfer of data and files.

The music system plays files in a number of popular formats including MP3 and WMA. The phone also has an FM radio.

The digital camera has five megapixels, and the finished result is a good clear photograph with this smart phone. It has a built in image stabiliser ensuring a picture perfectly in focus, and geo-tagging so that the location is marked as well as the time and date. The camera also video records and can replay in MPEG4, WMV and H263 formats.

The internet browser allows you to search using the Google search engine and to connect to the social networking site Facebook.

A Samsung Lucido S7220 review reveals the fact that Samsung has realised that there is still a market out there for a traditional mobile telephone, that actually looks and feels like a phone without the need for a degree in technology to switch it on. The Samsung Lucido S7220 is such a phone.

The design is more classic, slim lined and angular than most contemporary shapes and it has a traditional keypad and limited memory space. It does feature a bizarre fake call hot key to get you out of sticky situations and you can even record audio so it sounds like there is someone on the other end.

The Samsung Lucido comes with a lot of admirable qualities despite its basic concept. The AMOLED screen is excellent, nice, bright and easy to see. It includes a 5 megapixel camera, powerful LED, auto focus, video shoots in MPEG4 format, and it is also capable of video calling.

The multiplayer supports all common music formats and adding a microSD card gives you an extra 8GB and can increase the 110MB memory. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so choice of speakers is a little limited but it does come with a good quality sound system. It is 3G equipped but the screen will not give you the same web browsing experience you get from smartphones, but GPS is included as standard.

In its class, the S7220 is probably the best Samsung mobile phone, with a number of quality features and very little to complain about.

Think of the Samsung S7330 as the Samsung Soul lite – it’s certainly what the company seems to be doing with this new slider mobile phone. It’s available as a contract mobile phone for a low tariff from 3.

So is there anything that sets the S7330 apart from its big soulful brother? The answer is, not really. The design isn’t quite as sleek, but it’s still a very solid and smooth slider phone that does all the basics very well, packing in a three megapixel camera which takes surprisingly good pictures and includes autofocus, which seems to be virtually standard these days, but is still a good feature, and it can take movies.

Yes, there’s an FM radio, but no 3.5mm headphone jack, so there’s no choice of headphones for the user. But a 3.5G connection allows for quick, smooth uploads and downloads, and a card slot allows users to add up to 8GB of extra memory. That’s good, although this doesn’t seem like the kind of phone where it would be necessary.

Like the Soul, the S7330 boasts that touch sensitive navigation pad, which does a good job. The keypad is well spaced, so texting and calling is easy, with few typos and no cramping.

In other words, it’s all good, but essentially no different from the Samsung Soul. Given that the Soul is widely available on contracts that are quite comparable, it leaves one wondering just what the purpose of the S7330 is? It does the job well enough, but is it necessary?
