As per the Google Voice blog, the voice feature will soon be rolled out in many new countries, including UK in the next few days. It permits the users to make cheap international calls from within their Gmail accounts. Once active, the UK Gmail users will be able to buy credit in local currency and successfully make cheaper calls in 38 different languages to 150+ countries in the world.

This service has been active in US, though in a limited way, for some time now. The calls from landline or mobile phones cost as less as two cents and ten cents per minute respectively in US.

Google Voice’s working is quite simple: all you need to do is log in to your Gmail account and make the call. It is a free service and there are no associated connection or subscription charges. All you have to pay is the time you use it for.

Pierre Lebeau, Project Manager at Google Voice stated that they are consistently engaged in developing solutions that can make connectivity easier for people – whether that implies sending an email, video chat or IM, all doable from within the Gmail account.

The changes will be rolled out in the next few days. You will see a green phone icon right over the chat feature as soon as it is available. Going by the UK standards, I suspect that our costs will be on the higher side only, however, still lesser than what is normally charged by BT or mobile service providers.

One word of caution: make sure you connect through Google voice only. Otherwise, you might burn a hole in your pocket with a bill as big as a mortgage payment or even more.

Galen Gruman, in a recent article has discussed the possible effect of the raging popularity of Androids and the iPhone expansion, on RIM, the Blackberry makers and HP, the WebOS conjurers. The article also analyzes how Microsoft Windows could be affected too.

According to recent findings doing the rounds, Android has now occupied the throne for the most revered smartphone platform in US. iOS is not lagging far behind though. This leads to a precarious situation for HP and RIM, while Microsoft and Nokia can bid farewell to the market and the competition altogether.

However, the point of many recent theories is not just about how completely iOS and Android have dominated the smartphone market. There is another point of discussion that is slowly growing from whispers and murmurs into something more substantial. It is about whether this smartphone market has been eating into the PC market pie. There are predictions of Google and Apple overtaking PC giants, Microsoft Windows in the next 5 – 10 years.

RIM still has some time to recover and would do well to focus on specialty features allowing it to hold on to the 3rd place in the smartphone industry. Gruman believes that HP would do well to forget entirely about the tablet and the mobile market and concentrate on other areas instead. This is substantiated by hints that HP’s WebOS is likely to be used for printers and devices with multifunctional abilities. It seems like the mobiles are taking hold of the imaginations of a world that is changing fast.

On Monday, Google announced that it is to launch a new smartphone called Nexus S. Although, it might not entirely revolutionize the way we buy smartphones, it is very likely to transform the way people use them, since integrated short-range wireless technology would allow people to explore innovative ways of gathering information and make purchases through their handset.

Nexus S, the new handset, would be a credit card enabled smartphone that uses the latest version of Android, known as ‘Gingerbread’. Critics opine that Gingerbread was very essential with Google trying hard to beat Apple iPhone.

At present, the NFC technology that is supposed to be the first step towards making credit cards obsolete, would only be utilized for collecting information rather than sending it. For example, a user may walk up to some movie poster that has an NFC chip embedded in it, scan it and then watch the movie trailer on his smartphone. It is expected that this technology can later be tweaked for buying things as well.

The NFC technology isn’t new, but retailers have never been keen to offer it till date. However, the scenario might change drastically as this Android OS gains popularity.

Just like Nexus One, the first Google own-brand phone, Nexus S would be available as a SIM free unlocked handset or via a contract with T-Mobile. But unlike its predecessor, this new smartphone will be manufactured by Samsung and will be available online from Google directly (Nexus one was built by HTC).

Particularly, they are facing issues while opening PDF files and the problem spans a range of smartphones along with a few different revisions of the Android OS. Now, Google wants some help in resolving this issue.

With numerous complaints registered on its mobile help forum, Google had initially asked for complete information – which handset, which version of Gmail, list of the file types that failed to open, which version of Android, etc. This continued for almost a month without any further feedback from Google concerning the issue. Perhaps the problem is a tough one to crack.

Google has now used that forum and requested Android developers and more advanced users for help, asking them to sort out the issue by directing these people to a webpage saying, “Thanks for volunteering to help the Gmail team further investigate reports of attachment issues on Android devices. Please provide your email address below so we can contact you with instructions for helping us debug. — Android Gmail team”

With all the assistance from Android developers and advanced users, Google will probably now be able to pin point the problem soon, and offer suitable updates required to resolve the matter permanently.

The long awaited Google answer to the Apple iPhone was finally launched in the USA and the ‘phone, which is called Nexus One uses software designed by the internet giant and will take on the dominant iPhone, which is used by 25million people worldwide. Its launch, which also coincides with the launch of an internet store for customers to purchase the phone, is certainly going to see a battle between the two companies for supremacy in this lucrative mobile ‘phone market.

Using a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, this is more powerful than the 600MHz of its Apple rival, the Nexus One runs on runs on Android 2.1 which is the latest version of Google software. This offers Google Maps Navigation, which effectively acts as a satnav, multiple Gmail accounts and thousands of applications through the android market. Another feature is a trackball that pulses one of three colours to indicate an incoming e-mail, call or text message. It further includes two microphones which it is claimed cancels out background noise allowing a clear call on a busy street. Another useful feature is that the Nexus One will also recognise when it is moved from outside to inside and will change screen brightness accordingly. Voice recognition allows users can talk into the phone and the Nexus will type out their speech, which then can be e-mailed or texted to others.

The Nexus will be available in the UK through Vodaphone this spring, although no exact launch date was given.
