If you have a look around your home you are sure to find at least one and probably more disused mobile phones in drawers and cupboards and since it is illegal in UK to throw them away with your ordinary rubbish, you will eventually find that they are difficult to get rid of. The solution is to sell the handsets that you are not using. If you leave them too long they will become obsolete, because mobile phone handsets change very quickly.

Once you have decided to sell your handset you need to find the best price available for it from all the mobile phone buyers out there. This can be quite time consuming, because there are so many of them, but there are a number of comparison websites that can make the job that much easier. Find the one with the best price and check that there is free postage, because there is no point in getting a higher price and having to pay for postage. Once you have done this you can request a padded envelope from the company and send your phone to them. You can also send chargers, headphones and other accessories, but these do not increase the price you will get.

Once your phone is received it will be checked and if it is in perfect order you will be sent a cheque or cash transfer to your bank. If the phone is damaged, the company will let you know and tell you how much it will pay you. You can then accept the offer or refuse and have your phone returned.

The good news for regular Samsung users is that the Galaxy is in keeping with the same well known Samsung design, making using the phone very straightforward. A popular smartphone, the Galaxy has features such as a barcode scanner, turning the handsets built in camera into a scanner then accessing the information via the internet to get the best prices for that product.

The 3G technology available with the Galaxy means accessing the internet via the Wi-Fi feature ensures quicker downloads and faster connections. Another popular feature on a lot of the latest mobile phones is a GPS tracking system, helpful if going out of town to find one’s way around. The Samsung Galaxy also offers a tap touch screen similar to the iPhone and has Bluetooth making hands free telephone calls much easier for those on the go.

Some users of the Samsung Galaxy may find that trying to text in landscape is awkward as the keyboard is rather small and fairly clumsy to use, but after a few tries it is easy enough to get the hang of.

Poor battery life is another downside to this handset, especially when using the 3G and Wi-Fi features; this seems to drain the battery much more quickly and reduces battery life to just a couple of hours.

The built in camera takes good quality pictures but seems to be very sensitive to light which can result in glare on the photographs taken, or making the pictures look ‘washed out’.

The Samsung Galaxy is a good all round phone with a few areas for improvement.

The W910i is the first Sony Ericsson which features ‘SensMe’, the music browser. It has a large screen which makes using the smart phone easy. The phone is compact but the small keyboard may make some functions awkward to use.

This Walkman phone has a music browser making all the music functions easy to use. The sound quality of the phone is better than most and most types of music files are supported. Downloading tracks onto the handset is straightforward. The music browser sorts tracks according to mood and tempo. In spite of the emphasis on music with this phone there is no headphone jack although there is an adaptor. Serious music fans will find that the memory is not adequate for their needs as it is just 35mb internal memory, though this can be boosted with the use of memory cards.

The phone has a built-in camera but it is only 2-megapixels and has no flash or automatic focus, although there is a digital zoom function. There is also an in-built radio.

Internet access is via 3G and from the home page various internet sites can be easily accessed, including news and social networking sites. There is also the option to upload text and photos straight to a Blogger page and the applications on the phone can automatically set this up for you.

This phone is ideal for those who like the functions of a MP3 player combined with a phone, though other functions such as the camera are very basic in comparison.

With so many companies offering to buy your old mobile, the question of what happens to all these recycled phones comes to mind. Actually, there are two different paths that your phone may travel, once you put it on the road to mobile phone recycling.

First, some companies urge consumers to sell mobiles they no longer need, refurbish them, and then sell the refurbished units in various markets around the world. This approach is nothing new; it’s been done with house phones for decades. Within a very short period of time, your old mobile may have a new look and be on its way to some exotic corner of the globe.

Another approach to mobile phone recycling involves harvesting components from the collected units. Here, your old mobile is disassembled, and the parts are used to repair or refurbish similar units. This is much less costly than buying replacement parts, and is a popular means of getting more use from older components.

Because old mobiles are of value in more than one situation, you have options when it comes to choosing which company will get your business. Take your time and wait for the best possible offer for your older unit. Assuming you have a popular brand that is still somewhat sought after, there may be more than one company that is interested in doing business with you. By taking a little time and exercising a little patience as you weigh your options, you may find that old phone is worth more than you thought.

The Tocco Lite is virtually identical to the LG Cookie and retails at a more expensive price, so is the Tocco Lite really a worthwhile purchase?

To look at, the handsets are exactly the same shape and size, as are the screens. The screens are also the same specification in type, colour definition, size and pixels. The screen is a big one – 3 inches – and works with Samsung’s Touchwiz, a familiar interface to the Samsung faithful. It is a popular interface and the mobile widgets allow you to customise the home screen so that it is simple to access the functions such as traffic conditions, the clock, etc. It comes with a built-in accelerometer sensor that lets you rotate the screen between portrait and landscape.

Like the LG Cookie, there’s a 3.2 megapixel camera with smile detection and digital zoom. It also allows you to edit your photos on-screen. There’s also a basic camcorder.

There’s a FM radio with RDS and the Tocco Lite supports the downloading of MP3 ringtones. The audio quality is above average.

The LG Cookie and the Tocco Lite both have memories that increase to 16 GB with a memory card. Also like the Cookie, this does not have Wi-Fi so access to sites like YouTube is slow and laborious.

This is a budget phone and for the money is a little cracker. On the whole, the Tocco Lite just sneaks ahead of the LG Cookie in terms of value for money.

Once you’ve decided that selling mobile phones that are just laying about the house is a good idea, the next step is to decide which cash for mobiles dealer to work with. As is often the case, not every business that buys old mobiles works in exactly the same way. Here are some tips on how to choose the best one.

Communication is extremely important in any business deal. If you find that a given dealer is evasive or seems to have little time for your questions, that’s a good reason to look for another one. Companies that buy old phones know that word of mouth is one of their best forms of advertising, and will treat all queries with due consideration, and thus earn good publicity.

Next, there is the matter of price. Obviously, you want to get the best price you possibly can for your previously owned mobile. While the chances of making very much are slim, shopping around for the best offer is always a good idea. Depending on the age and popularity of the brand, you may find one or two dealers offer significantly more than the rest.

Then make sure the payment terms are acceptable. Look for any hidden clauses that open the door for delays, commit you to paying shipping charges, or any other aspect of the transaction that is not favorable. Weigh these factors against the rates offered for your phone. While the payment may not be the highest, you need to take any extra costs into account, and you may come out ahead by accepting the lower figure.

The Samsung Genio Touch (others may know it as the S3650 Corby) is a simple to use 3G touch screen phone. It has a 2.8-inch colour touch screen, which is a large screen in an overall compact phone measuring 10.3 cm in height, 5.7 cm in width and 1.3 cm in depth. It’s a lightweight phone weighing only 92g including the battery which makes it economical for carrying; it avoids being insubstantial, however, because of its overall design.

Included with the handset is an expandable memory card slot allowing the user to insert a memory card with a capacity of up to sixteen gigabytes of external memory. The phone operates over GSM and 3G networks, and has inbuilt EDGE technology and GPRS which ensures that the user has high speed connectivity to the internet. The Genio Touch has the capability to speedily transfer files to other hardware.

The phone connects to Bluetooth compatible devices with a wire free Bluetooth connection or a USB connection with USB devices.

The Genio Touch has an integrated WAP web browser that supports XHTML and HTML web browsing.

The phone comes with the standard SMS texting service, email, camera and video, contact list and games. All services are straightforward and simple to operate.

In addition to this, the phone also can be used as a radio and a music centre. Music can be downloaded from PCs or from an internet music store. The phone supports WMA, MP3 and eAAc music formats.

The latest mobile phones foal in the Blackberry stable is available as a contract mobile phone, and if you are prepared to sign up for a 24 month contract the mobile phone deals to be had are some of the best around. This is top of the range Blackberry technology, and as well as the normal mobile office applications this comes with the added bonus of being able to read your office documents, and yes, you can edit them too. With this model wherever you go you can take your mobile office with you.

Blackberry mobile phones offer a full QWERTY keyboard, which for many is the preferred way to text and email, and the Blackberry Curve 8900 also offers a built in music player. This is one of the latest mobile phones to watch, but for some there is not a great hurry to make a decision and they will be happy to wait until the mobile phone news has had time to process and review this new addition fully, to see whether it really has all that it claims to have.

Whatever the reviewers decide it is already clear that this is one sleek looking handset that comes with built in GPS and Bluetooth. It also offers you the ability to expand the memory with an optional memory card slot, which means that you can have a massive amount of tunes stored for your MP3 player or keep lots of pictures that you take with the built in camera, the choice is yours.

Mobile phones are basically made up of 58% plastic, 25% metals, 16% ceramic and 1% flame retardant materials. Of these components, the most valuable is the metals. The most common valuable metals found in mobile phones include copper, silver, gold, palladium and platinum.

Mobile phones are small and so the amount of metals in them is also small. However, considering the estimate of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that 4.6 billion phone units were in use in 2009 and that around 130 million mobile phones are discarded every year in the United States alone, the quantity and the monetary value of the metals in those mobile phones become significant.

In 2005 alone, 130 million mobile phones retired in the USA yielded a whopping 2,100 metric tonnes of copper. Silver amounted to 46 metric tonnes while gold reached a figure of 3.9 metric tonnes and palladium two metric tonnes. Considering that the data is not even recent and that the statistics speaks only for the United States, it is believed that current world figures are astronomical!

Metal can always be sold and reused, and with amounts reaching metric tonnes in terms of weight, one just cannot imagine the money that is generated from these waste metals. The term “waste” is actually almost a misnomer what with the 2,100 metric tonnes of copper from stored obsolete mobile phones in the US in 2005 alone generating a value of $17 million. For gold and palladium, the figures are $199 million and $63 million respectively.

With this in mind, it is easy to understand why phone companies want your old mobile phone so badly!
